Dear Station Members,

As part of our regional connection, CAA was invited as a VIP to attend the 2013 First Internal Bonsai Exhibition & Conference of China.  Some of the photos of the event are attached for public reference.

Some may ask what has Bonsai Conference got to do with Modern Arboriculture?  However, if one would carefully study how a Bonsai is produced & kept for a hundred years, would there not be similarities in the growing methods, maintenance, pruning, fertilization, soil science & risk assessment (of it dying or toppling in wind) ?  Crown Cleaning, Crown thinning & Crown Reduction are frequently used in Bonsai maintenance, although the Chinese never understood why they were done that way.  The Bonsai masters appear to look into results, rather than trying to understand the science of it.

A good Bonsai is a well structured & healthy miniaturized tree.  Bonsai practically means a big tree growing in a pot.  The longer the Bonsai would survive & the bigger it is, the more expensive it becomes in the market.  Trying to grow a tree in a pot, & to help it survive for a hundred years, would certainly take some skills.  The soil, the drainage, pruning, fertilization, etc. are all challenges.  It would be even harder to ensure survival in a container so small, if comparing to urban tree planting.

Somehow the Chinese have mastered these skills & have done it for thousands of years.  But if asked how they can do it, they would explain in unscientific terms that hardly the outsiders, especially the Arborists who are trained in science, could apprehend.  The CAA President Sammy Au himself is a third generation Bonsai Master, & has grown up with Bonsai production since he was 6.  Even so he has difficulties in communicating with the other Bonsai Masters in terms of science.

Bosai is a big business in China, & it is practiced by wealthy businessmen & influential officials.  This is where CAA has set our eyes upon them, to let them promote Modern Arboriculture for us in the Land of the Old Dragons.  Having insiders would speed up the process always in this part of the world.

CAA is working hard to seek every opportunity to promote the Arborist Profession in the China Region.  We do not give up any chance, be it routine or not yet, as long as it can achieve our goal at the end.

best regards,

Sammy Au
