Dear Station Members,

The Tree Care Industry Association (http://tcia.org) , a leading Arbor Group with history in the world, is yet another regular contact with CAA in recent years.

Established in 1938 as the National Arborist Association in North America, today's Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) is a trade association of more than 2,200 commercial tree care firms and affiliated companies.  Their mission is to advance tree care businesses.

TCIA develops safety and education programs, standards of tree care practice, and management information for arboriculture firms around the world.  Produced by arborists, for arborists, and tested in the field, TCIA regards their training material as relevant and applicable.

TCIA runs a Certified Tree Care Safety Professional (CTSP) program & is said to be the only safety credentialing program in the industry in North America. TCIA data shows that companies there with an employee enrolled in the CTSP program, would experience fewer accidents and injuries, less lost time and reduced costs.

TCIA's Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP), first introduced in 1975, has helped train thousands of arborists - those involved in line clearance and those working on residential properties near energized lines. The US Army Corp of Engineers has recognized this credential and often requires EHAP certification for companies to qualify for storm-related clean-ups.

TCIA’s Tree Care Academy offers a variety of courses that can be used by employers for credentialing and training of employees according to industry standards. It is designed to teach and test for critical skills and knowledge to verify the competency of employees to work safely and professionally in and around trees and equipment.

In addition to training, TCIA also provides continuing education, conferences and publications to promote the safe and appropriate practice of tree care.  TCI Magazine is said to be the most circulated and read publication in the industry in North America; & the TCI EXPO is known to be the world's largest tree care industry trade show and conference.  TCIA also runs a Winter Management Conference which is described as the premiere business conference for the tree care industry.

TCIA works to help consumers identify proper tree care and qualified tree care companies in North America.  Through TCIA's Accreditation program, consumers can find tree care companies that have been inspected and accredited based on adherence to industry standards for quality and safety; professionalism; and dedication to ethics and quality in business practices.

The mission of TCIA is relevant to the CAA course of advancing the Arborist Profession in the China Region, although TCIA appears to specifically focus on the contractors & suppliers section of our profession.  CAA will continue to liaise with various international groups of our profession in the world, to work jointly with them to develop our profession in our own territory.

best regards,

Sammy Au
