Topic: “Insects Closely related to Tree Planting in Hong Kong” – Concepts, Identification and Management

1. Concepts of Tree/Insects/Human relations:
Living organism, no matter Trees, insects or us as human being, are all inter-related or even dependent to each other in the whole balanced ecosystem. Insects may harm trees or human, but in turn they are actually essential to the survival of trees and human. How the balanced ecosystem works, is essential for us to understand how trees & insects survive around our environment.

2. Basic insect morphology, classification and biology:
Insects, as the most diverse and numerous living creatures in the world, show many extraordinary adaptations in their bodies to survive in different environment. Knowing the basic biology of insects is useful for understanding them during filed observation.

3. Phloem-sucking Insects:
Many insects on trees suck the nutrient from phloem of trunk, branch, root, twigs or leaves. They have specialized sucking mouth part to facilitate the process. Hemiptera (e.g. bugs, cicadas) is example of these group of insect.

4. Leaf-eating Insects
As leaves are the fresh part of a tree in every growing season, they are good food source for many insects with chewing mouth part. Caterpillar of Lepidoptera (e.g. moths and butterflies) is a good example, with some of these species showing themselves to be host-specific.

5. Wood-Borers
Larvae of many Coleoptera (e.g. Long-horned Beetle and Jewel Beetle) are significant wood-borers causing structural damage in a lot of trees in many countries.

6. Root-eating Insects
Some insects live in soil to consume roots of a tree as food source, and they are difficult to find during visual inspection. Symptom on foliage is usually the first sign of their presence.

7. Management
Before trying to manage insects during tree planting, knowing their biology, life cycle and their relationship with the concerned trees are very important. Misuse of pesticide not only complicates the problem, it can further deteriorate the situation.
